DS Technology has introduced a linear motion machine from Italian company Mecof that is suitable for processing a variety of materials, including hardened tool steels, light alloys and composites.

The Linearmill machine, which features a moving cross-rail, vertical-spindle design, has a large working envelope of 2,500mm to 10,000mm in the X axis by up to 2,200mm in the Y axis and 1,000mm in the Z axis.

The general-purpose machine, ideal for large machining centres, features a rigid build and excellent dynamics, enabling the rapid production of dimensionally accurate parts exhibiting a high-quality finish on all machined surfaces, even those of complex 3D shape.

The three orthogonal axes are driven by linear motors for high productivity when producing large components such as moulds and dies, airframe parts, vehicle components and other prismatic items.

Ultra-fast acceleration at 1g and axis feed rates up to 100m/min reduce component processing and idle times compared with machines with ballscrew-driven axes, according to the company.

The machine is available in three- or five-axis versions, with the fourth and fifth axes provided by movement built into the motor spindle head, which can have up to 45kW of power and a maximum speed from 18,000rev/min to 30,000rev/min to suit a range of applications.

A head changer can be specified and, for automatic HSK 63-E tool change, magazine capacity is from 24 pockets upwards.

Control is by either the Heidenhain iTNC 530 or the Siemens 840D CNC system.
