MMPP Salut, a Russian manufacturing company specialising in the production and maintenance of aero engines, has replaced its metalworking fluids with an oil product developed by Master Chemical.

To improve the production of aerospace engine components and associated carbide tooling, MMPP Salut decided that it needed to revise its fluid technology.

Two brands of grinding oils had previously been trialled.

While the price of one was favourable, its performance was not; as a result, management switched to the alternative, which just reversed the problem.

Both products were being used on Reishauer gear grinding machines and Anca five-axis universal grinders, which were predominantly manufacturing steels and carbide.

Typical examples of the poor performance exhibited by the cheaper of the two fluids included inconsistent part quality, very high consumption of the fluid and misting.

Although these issues were resolved by the introduction of the alternative fluid, it added 50 per cent more to the cost of production.

Master Chemical Europe has a range of metalworking oils that have been formulated for the specific needs of carbide and HSS profile and flute grinding.

The Trim OG108 oil, which was introduced earlier this year, provided an ideal solution for MMPP Salut’s problems.

This product uses a refined hydro-cracked base oil to ensure excellent high flash point and anti-mist properties.

Yuri Reshmin, Master Chemical’s district manager, said: ‘This low-viscosity oil provides excellent detergency that keeps the customer’s grinding wheels clean.

‘And this, together with excellent workpiece cooling, ensures minimal burning throughout the grinding process.

‘Also, MMPP Salut has been able to reduce machine maintenance frequency and parts wastage,’ added Reshmin.

The Coolant Management Company

Master Chemical develops and markets a comprehensive metalworking fluid
programme.  Its products are cutting and grinding fluids, cutting oils,
washing and cleaning compounds and rust preventatives.  They are all
marketed under the brand name, TRIM.

Since 1990 Master Chemical Europe has provided a dedicated sales and
manufacturing service for Europe.  In that time it has also become the
centre of excellence for product development to meet the specific production
needs of European manufacturers.

Its research has led to the introduction of a range of water- and vegetable
ester based formulations that are non-hazardous yet offer superb production

The need for this type of metalworking fluid is driven by EU regulation and
as a result Master Chemical Europe is now the leading manufacturer of
application-specific metalworking fluids.

When used in conjunction with Master Chemical’s trademark coolant management
strategies, these products provide optimum productivity and significant
operating cost reduction.

To provide greater capacity for this work the company recently moved to new
premises that include a laboratory that is three times bigger than its

Master Chemical Europe is now responsible for supporting an ever-expanding
distributor network, extending from Portugal in the south to Russia and
Scandinavia in the north and east.
