Linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) from RDP Electronics can be used to measure high-speed, high-frequency movements on mechanical structures in applications such as switch testing, recoil testing, blast testing and component testing.

The LVDTs are offered in spring-return, guided and unguided mechanical configurations.

A typical RDP LVDT and amplifier combination can have a mechanical frequency response of up to 500Hz.

  • For applications where more speed is required, the signal-conditioning electronics can be modified.
  • The spring-return LVDT is limited by the ratio of the mass of the amplifier compared with the strength of the spring (typically a limit of 10Hz on a short transducer).
  • Capacitive transducers are not restricted in this way — however, they contain guidance bearings, which will eventually begin to wear.
  • Unguided transducers are the preferred configuration for high-frequency applications; this version can be arranged to make physical contact between the armature and body of the transducer and so can operate indefinitely at high frequencies.
