Malthouse has worked with Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council to fabricate a welcome sign to be installed on Birchley Island at Junction Two of the M5 and the Birmingham Wolverhampton new road.

The main letters have been produced from S355, 350mm-thick steel plate and measure 3m tall and 7m long.

The plate, weighing a total of 18.7 tonnes, was cut using a 450 x 600mm gas nozzle and ground using 24J grit stones on Malthouse’s 120in Lumsden grinder.

The fabrication, weighting a total of 8.5 tonnes, was installed on the island in May 2010.

The backing plates, which will feature scenes from the region’s past and present, have been put on hold until October pending further government cutbacks.
