Eighteen 4WREE6 valves and an A10VO63DFR pump from Bosch Rexroth are being used on Mantis, the world’s biggest operational all-terrain hexapod robot, which was designed by Matt Denton, managing director of Micromagic Systems.

Mantis is 2.7m tall and resembles a giant insect. It can be driven remotely or piloted from the machine’s cockpit. It took four years to develop.

Rexroth 4WREE6 valves provide the integral function of controlling the hydraulic cylinders that operate Mantis’s six legs. Each leg features three independent closed-loop axes — one at the knee and two at the hip — with feedback provided by sensors installed on the outside of the leg.

The A10VO63DFR pump supplies the robot’s hydraulic power. Fitted with load sensing, the pump ensures that only the right flow and pressure are delivered, reducing power consumption.

Key benefits of product application

  • Chief designer Denton said he was aware of Rexroth valves from their use in special effects on films he had worked on in the past.
  • Bosch Rexroth’s Nigel Hart specified the 4WREE6 valves and provided assistance and advice on the hydraulic design of circuits, safety considerations, reducing the reservoir size and cooling.
  • Denton said what impressed him most about the Bosch Rexroth valves was their smooth and accurate control.
