Semi-synthetic metalworking fluids from Master Chemical are suitable for use during the processing of difficult-to-machine materials. The company said that its products — including Trim SC617 and Trim SC516 — combine the cooling and lubricity benefits of synthetic metalworking fluids with the excellent residue characteristics of emulsions.

Trim SC617 contains a traditional extreme-pressure (EP) additive that is said to boost cutting performance, making it particularly effective on stainless steel and other hard steels. Its low foam profile enables its use in through-tool machining applications.

Trim SC516 is specifically formulated for machining and grinding cast iron, steel and aluminium.

Trim SC617

  • A general subcontractor in Littlehampton trialled Master Chemical’s Trim SC617 to solve foaming issues with its existing product on a Daewoo machining centre. Using Trim SC617, foam was minimised without any loss of performance on hard materials. The company is now in the process of converting all its machines to the semi-synthetic.
  • A company involved in the manufacture of injection moulds for the plastic closures industry saved costs and improved the working environment by switching to Trim SC617. It reported poor sump life with the product it was previously using in its turning, milling and grinding machines. The metalworking fluid was also giving off a bad odour after only two months of use. The subcontractor trialled Trim SC617 in a lathe and surface grinder; it performed well on the steels and aluminium predominantly used by the company and also extended the sump life way beyond the existing maximum of 12 weeks. The semi-synthetic was also reported to run cleaner than the existing fluid.

Trim SC516

  • A Bedfordshire-based manufacturer that produces workholding fixtures for CNC milling machines agreed to a trial of Trim SC516 on a Bridgeport machining centre to evaluate its performance. The semi-synthetic is specifically formulated for machining and grinding cast iron, steel and aluminium — the company’s principal materials of manufacture. Its clean-running formulation prevents the loading of grinding wheels, ensuring good surface finish and minimal burning. The product performed well during the test on all operations and materials and as a result the manufacturer has cut costs, acquired Master Chemical’s ongoing support and reduced its product inventory from two metalworking fluids to one.
