Portable electrical test equipment specialist Megger has provided the BBC programme DIY SOS — The Big Build with an MFT1730 multifunction test set.

The unit is being used by the show’s resident electrician, Billy Byrne, who is in charge of testing all electrical installations.

The MFT1730 tester provided for the show is designed for testing electrical installations in line with the 17th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations.

Key benefits of product application

  • The tester is protected against damage if it is accidentally connected to a live supply when a dead circuit test is selected, and this protection is effective even if the test has been locked on.
  • The unit is lightweight and IP54 rated, which means that it can be easily transported from site to site, and it is also splash proof and ingress protected. These are all essential features for an instrument being used on a fast-moving TV programme.
  • The unit benefits from large backlit display panels and time-saving features including two-wire non-trip loop testing, auto-start continuity testing and auto-RCD testing.
  • Kerry Burdett, sales engineer for Megger, said: ‘The equipment Megger provided will be put to good use. In this instance, the MFT1730 will be used on a project for a family of five with a disabled son, so safety is paramount.’
