Melexis has introduced the MLX81200 BLDC Motor Controller, featuring Trusense and Sinedrive technologies.

This development opens new possibilities for system integration of automotive BLDC motor applications.

Trusense technologies combine reluctance measurement with BEMF sensing for detecting and tracking rotor position.

This combination allows robust motor operation across a dynamic range and in harsh environments.

These sensorless BLDC motor controllers feature dedicated hardware blocks and motor control algorithms to guarantee failsafe and robust sensorless operation under stringent automotive conditions.

On-the-fly rotor-position sensing allows fast startup to nominal speed within 70ms.

The BEMF (Back Electromotive Force) uses a phase integrator to enable operation from ultra-low to high motor speeds under fast varying load conditions.

The Sinedrive motor control allows shaping of the motor current to optimise each motor’s efficiency and torque ripple, critical in applications such as engine-cooling fans and HVAC blowers.

Sensorless Sinewave motor control reduces noise and conducted and radiated emissions, simplifying the motor control.

The MLX81200 is suitable for water pumps and transmission oil-pumps in hybrid power trains.

BLDC fuel pumps, active suspension control, engine cooling fans and HVAC blowers will also benefit from using this controller.

The MLX81200 combines a 16-bit microcontroller with a high voltage analogue periphery for BLDC motor control, allowing smallest application PCBs with only a few external discrete components.

It features 30 kB Flash program memory, 2 kB Sram, 128 B data EEPROM, a voltage regulator, on chip RC oscillator, predriver for directly driving six n-channel power FETs, accurate shunt current sensing, independent analogue watch dog, high voltage I/Os and several diagnostic functions for failsafe operation.

The MLX81200 is available in QFN48 and TQFP48 7 x 7mm packages.

It has been qualified up to 150C ambient temperature, making it ideal for under-the-hood applications.
