Specialist Glass Products has utilised a Micropump and inverter system from Michael Smith Engineers to produce panels that are used as cladding for the outside of buildings to maximise light and heat.

The manufacturer was finding the process, which involves making reinforced laminated double-glazed panel sections in sizes up to 5m, some of which need to be curved, virtually impossible to complete using traditional pumps.

Michael Smith Engineers was tasked with providing a pumping system that would deliver a smooth, even and accurate output to reduce the chance of entrained bubbles. It also needed to incorporate a sealless magnet coupling, preventing resin from being exposed to air.

The requirement was for a pumped batch metering transfer system for acrylic monomer resin with a viscosity of 100cP.

The system comprised a Micropump with an inverter-controlled motor with integral dual-channel encoder for operating at speeds of up to 2,100rev/min.

  • The resin was delivered smoothly and accurately at an optimum speed, eliminating the problems of entrained bubbles.
  • A second system has since been supplied to batch-meter a similar acrylic monomer resin, but with a viscosity of 0.8 to 2cP.
