Micro-Epsilon has launched the OptoNCDT 1700BL blue laser sensor, which can be used to measure the position or displacement of red-hot glowing metals and translucent targets.

Equipped with ‘high-end’ optical lenses, as well as laser control and evaluation rhythms, the sensors are designed for measurements on hot, glowing metals up to 1,600ºC, particularly in hot steel processing applications, as well as for measuring organic materials such as skin, foodstuffs, plastics, veneers and wood.

According to Micro-Epsilon, the blue laser’s wavelength of 405nm makes it is easier to filter the type of light emitted from red glowing metals and ceramics, ensuring stable signals in tasks such as measuring the wear or deformation of automotive brake discs under load.

The laser also has an advantage in measuring against translucent objects, such as organic materials, paper, some plastics and wood veneers, because the lower-intensity blue laser does not penetrate into the measuring object.
