Microsoft Windows Embedded will show the latest Windows 7-based developments for manufacturing at the upcoming Hannover Messe industrial fair.

Siemens, Beckhoff, Online Development and other key partners in the manufacturing industry will demonstrate Windows Embedded Standard 7, Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3, Windows Embedded Server and Windows Embedded’s portfolio of platforms and technologies that help manufacturing companies drive connectivity between plant floor and backend systems, reducing the time to market, increasing plant reliability and lowering production costs.

According to Microsoft, Windows Embedded provides technology platforms, tools and support to help deliver real-time, reliable, flexible and cost-efficient industrial solutions, from sensors to servers.

Windows Embedded Standard 7 is said to deliver the power, familiarity and reliability of the Windows 7 operating system in a customisable and componentised form for a range of hardware and software and services that help reduce development costs and decrease the time to market.

Combined with Windows Embedded CE and Windows Embedded Server, Windows Embedded Standard 7 connects devices driving production processes to the business intelligence network that runs modern plants, enabling plants to be reconfigured quickly to meet the needs of the market.

The componentised Windows Embedded CE platform also enables manufacturers to run real-time systems, such as actuators, Smart I/O, a local human-machine interface (HMI), PLCs and a range of small-footprint or rugged devices.

Partners at the show will demonstrate a range of Windows Embedded solutions in the Microsoft booth, located in Hall 9, Stand G18.

Siemens and Microsoft have teamed up to envision the factory production line that uses the latest Windows Embedded technology.

Using Siemens industrial automation products running Windows Embedded Standard 7, Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 and other Windows Embedded operating systems, the Innovative Production Line proof of concept demonstrates end-to-end enterprise connectivity and user experiences across device boundaries – from data collecting sensors and smart devices on factory floors to server-based business intelligence applications in IT data centres.

Business benefits for manufacturers include process transparency from material ordering to goods delivery, constant production process optimisation and increased overall factory productivity.

Beckhoff, an implementer of open automation systems based on PC Control technology, will showcase a Green-IT solution for energy measurement that uses a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 controller to help measure temperature and power consumption.

RWE, a German electric power and natural gas public utility company, is working with Microsoft on the Smarthome project to create an energy-efficiency solution that connects heaters, electricity and IT to reduce energy costs and increase living comfort.

The Microsoft technologies used include Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3, Office Communication Server 2007 R2, Silverlight, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio Team System 2008.

Iconics, a creator of web-enabled manufacturing intelligence and business visualisation software, will be showcasing HMI panel displays with user interfaces powered by Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3.

Online Development, a developer of factory automation hardware and software products for the industrial market space, will showcase a software solution that enables controller-to-controller and enterprise-to-controller connections powered by Windows Embedded Standard 7.

Elbacom, a specialised distributor of professional and industrial embedded products, will exhibit light, durable and ruggedised touch-display devices powered by Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and tailored for manufacturing scenarios, including the IGEL UD3 Series Universal Desktop and the ruggedised IBD Future.Pad with a 10in (25cm) touch-screen display.

Light Blue Optics, a company that develops and supplies miniature projection systems for use in high-volume applications, will show Light Touch, an interactive projector powered by the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 operating system that creates a 10in touch screen, providing a high-brightness HMI/control-panel solution with built-in WiFi, enabling connectivity for industrial applications.
