Doosan distributor Mills CNC is to debut several models from the Puma and Lynx lathe series at Mach 2010.

The three Puma lathes on the company’s stand are the Puma 2100SY, the Puma 2600M and the Puma 3100XLY; and the new Lynx is a Lynx 300M lathe.

The Puma series comprises three different sizes of lathe: 8in chuck/65mm bar diameter; 10in chuck/76mm bar diameter; and 12in chuck/102mm bar diameter.

Different bed lengths and technical specifications – for example, C-axis, sub-spindles, Y-axis, driven tools and so on – means that, in total, there are 36 models in the Puma range.

The Pumas have been designed to go head-to-head against leading Japanese lathes, and have been produced following market research by Doosan into the stringent demands of today’s manufacturing industries and market sectors.

The Puma machines are based on a modular design/framework using common machine and CNC elements, and use the latest 3D CAD (product design) facilities.

A variety of additional technical options (for example, belt-driven or built-in motor spindles/sub-spindles; tow-along or servo-driven tailstocks; Y-axis, and so on) ensures that the Pumas can be tailored to meet manufacturers’ needs.

Mills CNC said the Pumas provide customers with improved accuracy and repeatability figures.

This has been achieved by increasing the machines’ rigidity and stability, and by reducing the thermal effects caused during machining.

The Pumas benefit from: a larger base casting footprint; enlarged headstock mounting area; reduced spindle length to minimise vibration; 40 per cent increase in slide-way contact area; 50 per cent increase in sub-spindle mounting area and heavier-duty sub-spindle.

Heat sources are isolated from the machine’s base and spindle by heat shields and fans, while oil/air lubrication reduces heat build-up in the driven tooling drive mechanism.

The Puma 2100SY has an 8in/65mm bar work diameter; a 5,000rev/min 22kW/358Nm built-in main spindle and 6,000rev/min 15kW/134Nm sub-spindle; C-axis; live tooling; and Y-axis.

The Puma 2600M has a 10in chuck/76mm bar work diameter; 3,500rev/min belt-driven spindle (22kW/625Nm); C-axis; and live tooling.

The Puma 3100XLY is described as a powerful lathe equipped with 12in chuck/102mm bar working diameter.

The machine also features a high-torque 3,000rev/min built-in spindle (30kW/1203Nm), a 12-station milling turret; and a 130mm Y-axis.

The Lynx 300 series is an extension to the range of two- and three-axis value-driven Lynx lathes.

The 300 series machines have a 10in chuck/76mm bar work diameter, and have full C-axis and live tooling capability.

The Lynx 300M is a general-purpose machine that is claimed to provide customers with good performance at a competitive cost.
