TME has introduced the XTR-ZB1 series of miniature modules designed for wireless data transmission according to the Zigbee (IEEE 802.15.4) standard and manufactured by Aurel.

The XTR-ZB1 modules are claimed to be a good alternative to traditional wire-type solutions in cases where a large number of scattered devices, such as sensors or media-consumption meters, have to be connected in a network.

The modules can also be used in industrial and building automation, security and protection systems, and telemetry applications.

The XTR-ZB1 modules operate in the ISM 2.4GHz public band using the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) transmission technique, which increases range and immunity to interferences.

Reliability is enhanced by Zigbee network mesh topology, which ensures alternative ways for data in case of network node failure and enables automatic switching of radio channels and quick network reconfiguration in cases of excessive interference.

An additional protection against external interferences is said to be ensured by the ability to lock the network after start-up and tests, guaranteeing reliable network operation even near other Zigbee networks.

Data transmission security is enhanced by the AES encryption method with a 128-bit key.

Depending on the structure of the Zigbee network there are three basic types of module available: the co-ordinator XTR-ZB1-CLI, router XTR-ZB1-RLI and end device XTR-ZB1-ELI.

The modules are the same in respect of hardware; they have different software.

The modules have a form of small board 35 x 25mm equipped with a 22-way connector.

Communication with the master processor is ensured by the RS232 serial interface with maximum transmission speed of 38,400b/sec that accepts the ASCII commands for network management and transmission of data packets.

In addition, the user is offered four analogue inputs, four outputs and three digital inputs, an interrupt input, and several other lines for signalisation and control.

The XTR-ZB1-xLI modules have the Planar Inverted F Antenna (PIFA) built in, ensuring 0dBm radiation power and -92dBm sensitivity and enabling up to 70m range in the open air.

The modules guarantee wireless transmission with a speed up to 250kb/sec.

When supplied with 3.3V, current consumption is 28/33mA in transmission/reception mode and 1uA in standby mode.

They can operate in ambient temperature from -40C to +85C.

To accelerate development works, the company offers a starter kit that includes co-ordinator and router demonstration boards, complete documentation and drivers and a demonstration program for a PC.
