Crysta-Apex S series brochure - .PDF file.

At the Farnborough International Airshow 2014, Mitutoyo highlighted its measuring expertise in measuring complex aero-engine components. Five key models in the company’s co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) line-up demonstrated the measurement of turbine blades, nozzle guide vanes and other difficult-to-measure parts.

Three of the machines were from the company’s Crysta-Apex series of high-performance-to-cost-ratio models that are now extensively used for aerospace metrology applications.

The Crysta Apex S9108 was used to demonstrate the fastest way to measure a blisk (bladed disk) by using five-axis scanning, a rotary table and the Mitutoyo MAFIS Express software dedicated to aerofoil section measurement.

Another model in the same series measured a compressor blade, demonstrating the multi-sensor approach to measuring aerofoil components with tactile measurement using an analogue scanning probe, non-contact measurement with the Mitutoyo line laser probe and surface finish measurement with the Mitutoyo Surftest probe. All three sensor options are simultaneously available on one machine for completely automated inspection within one measuring cycle.

Fitted with an analogue scanning probe, another machine displayed the scanning performance of Mitutoyo CMMs as applied to critical engine components that have many complex features, while high-speed, production-line measurement of a nozzle guide vane by a robust, shop-floor machine was demonstrated by the Mach 3A fitted with a tactile probe. The indexing table on this horizontal-arm CMM provides access to all sides of a component without resetting and provides an excellent choice for fully integrated machining and inspection solutions.

In contrast, a novel demonstration was provided by Mitutoyo’s Mach Ko-Ga-Me small-volume, small-footprint, agile measuring solution shown measuring a turbine blade with a tactile probe. The versatile CMM can be mounted on frames, machine tools or practically any other rigid structure and is especially designed to provide high-speed measurement of small components while taking up the minimum amount of floor space.
