The Automation Systems Centre (ASCent) based at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has launched Profibus/Profinet training modules for students looking to start a career in engineering.

According to the Profibus Group, this is in recognition of the increase in global acceptance of Profibus and Profinet as open international standards for industrial networking and communications that link sensors, drives, transmitters and computers for real-time systems.

As a fully accredited Profibus international competence centre, MMU is able to offer training in the necessary knowledge and skill sets to help students gain industry-recognised certification.

Through the training offered at MMU, students can take a number of exams covering the theory and practical knowledge of these subjects.

Success in these tests leads to certification recognised worldwide by employers in industrial automation, process control or other fields such as energy and environmental management.

Three modules are currently offered.

The first, Profibus Module 1, covers Certified Open PLC, Certified Profibus Installer and Profibus Commissioning and Maintenance.

Priced at GBP1,160, the module provides teaching, tutorial and assessment time of 42 hours over five days.

Profibus Module 2 includes Certified Open PLC, Certified Profibus Installer and Certified Profibus Engineer.

Priced at GBP2,400, this module offers teaching, tutorial and assessment time of 60 hours over eight days.

The Profinet Module covers Certified Open PLC and Certified Profinet Engineer.

Priced at GBP2,100, the Profinet Module delivers teaching, tutorial and assessment time of 50 hours over seven days.

The courses that these modules are derived from have been adapted to the needs of students.

The minimum entry requirement for the student modules is the possession or expectation of a degree at 2:2 or higher in an automation, instrumentation, electrical, electronic, mechanical, microcomputer or networking discipline.

Certified Profibus engineers and installers have the right to be listed on the Profiitech pages of the Profibus International website.
