Movetech UK has assisted MDM Props with the installation of a large, horizontal, moving ballerina on the side of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.

Globe Head Ballerina, created by artist Yinka Shonibare, was commissioned by the performing arts venue as part of the London 2012 Festival and will be in place for five years.

The life-sized figure was inspired by a photograph of ballerina Margot Fonteyn and modelled on Royal Ballet soloist Melissa Hamilton, but it was designed to spin sideways, creating difficulties for the installation team.

Movetech was tasked with constructing the turntable for this application. According to David Houghton, technical director of the company, vertically mounted turntables are very difficult to achieve; if the weight isn’t balanced, the heavier part will cause the turntable to slow down and then accelerate.
