MSC Vertriebs is offering products from the RX600 series of 32-bit microcontrollers from Renesas: the RX360 group for consumer and office automation; and the RX63N/RX631 group for networked equipment.

The 18 new RX63x MCUs – with up to 2MB of on-chip zero-wait-state flash memory and up to 128KB of SRAM – feature performance of up to 165DMIPS (Dhrystone version 2.1) at 100MHz.

A difference to members of the RX62x group is the real-time clock (RTC), which draws 0.6uW typical power in deep standby mode – about 90 per cent less than the RX62x MCUs with RTC.

The RTC requires 2.0V operating voltage, whereby an additional VBATT pin integrated on-chip ensures an automatic switchover from VCC to VBATT when VCC falls below VBATT.

A tamper-detection unit – in a separate VBATT power domain – allows tamper events on up to three input pins to be registered and time-stamped.

This allows recording even when the main power is off and the CPU is not operating.

The peripheral functions have been significantly expanded.

All nine RX63x MCUs now include a USB 2.0 (full-speed) device interface as well as 13 serial interfaces.

The number of 16-bit timer channels has been increased from 12 to a maximum of 22 and the number of A/D converter channels has been increased from 16 to a maximum of 29.

To support the connection with an almost unlimited range of external devices, the RX63N/RX631 group MCUs increase the number of I2C bus interface channels from two to four and increase the number of CAN interfaces from one to up to three channels.

Furthermore, the RX63N/RX631 group MCUs also add an EXDMAC that can transfer data over an external bus independently.

This allows these MCUs to easily move the data from an external frame buffer to TFT-LCD panels with resolutions of up to WQVGA and 16-bit colour depth.

A low-voltage detection circuit that can detect three voltages, an on-chip 50MHz oscillator and an on-chip temperature sensor improves ease of use.

Furthermore, due to an on-chip data flash with up to 100,000 erase cycles and finer write/erase granularity at 2-byte write and 32-byte erase, the need for external EEPROM devices is eliminated.

Renesas Electronics offers the High-Performance Embedded Workshop (HEW) integrated development environment (IDE), which includes the RX-optimising C/C++ compiler with integrated support for the low-cost E1 JTAG on-chip debugging tool, as well as the comprehensive E20 high-speed trace on-chip debugging tool.

The HEW IDE and Renesas Electronics’ C/C++ compiler come with unlimited use for 60 days and then the compiler size is limited to 128KB thereafter.

Renesas also provides a full firmware library for all peripherals and hardware development kits with sample code and protocol stacks.

The RX63x group line-up is available in LQFP, LGA and BGA package options with 64 to 77 pins in a compact 7 x 7mm size.

Data sheets and samples are available now from MSC.

According to the manufacturer, series production is expected to begin in June 2011.
