Alfa Laval has unveiled its largest self-cleaning filter, the ALF 80-R, which is suitable for use in a range of industrial sectors, including ships, power plants and district heating/cooling systems.

The filter provides protection for all downstream equipment, resulting in increased uptime and lower maintenance costs.

Alfa 80-R enables seawater and other poor quality water from sources such as rivers, lakes and canals, to be used to cool equipment and processes when the supply of treated water is limited or expensive.

The ALF 80-R removes debris that can foul and clog plate heat exchangers, tubular condensers, cooling tower spray nozzles and similar equipment.

The ALF 80-R is the largest member of the Alfa Laval Filter (ALF) family to date.

Its large capacity enables it to deal with ever-increasing demand for greater quantities of cooling water.

Higher capacity means fewer filters are needed, resulting in reduced space requirements and less pipe-work.

In addition, the low pressure drop through the filter permits a greater pressure drop for the downstream PHE or condenser.

This makes it possible to use a smaller heat transfer area and reduce the number of plates, therefore reducing the overall cost of the PHE or condenser.

Water or other media is pumped into a filter basket and any debris or other foreign objects are kept inside the filter until flushing.

Flushing is conducted in two steps.

At the first step, a flushing valve is opened and the retained debris is released.

During the next step – back-flushing – a flow-diverter valve diverts part of the liquid stream to back-flush the rear section of the filter basket and dislodge retained debris, while most of the stream passes through the filter outlet and is cleaned as usual.

As an option, the process can be controlled through differential pressure measurement.

However, a timer is always used in order to prevent the basket getting too dirty.

The ALF80-R is available with flange connections of DN800 flow rates ranging from 2800- 8840 m3/h at 3-30kPa.

Alfa Laval's operations are based on leading global positions in the three key technologies of heat transfer, separation and fluid handling. Continuous product development is essential to strengthen competitiveness. About 2.7 per cent of total sales are invested annually in research and development, resulting in 25–30 new product launches a year.

Alfa Laval's products are sold in approximately 100 countries, 50 of which have their own sales organisations. The company has 20 large production units (12 in Europe, six in Asia and two in the US) and 70 service centres.

The customer's peace of mind depends on having the right service setup. For Alfa Laval, service is a total concept that covers everything from supplying the smallest spare part to being a lifetime performance partner. Alfa Laval has a global network with more than 200 skilled service specialists, a broad range of competitive service solutions, unique expertise based on more than 120 years in business and service centres in hundreds of locations in more than 50 countries.
