Newport Corporation, a provider of lasers and photonics solutions, has announced details of its 1928-C single-channel benchtop optical meter.

The compact power meter – the latest addition to the company’s optical power meter and detector family – interfaces with all of Newport’s photodiode detectors, thermopiles and pyroelectric detectors.

It has the capability of measuring 11pW to 20kW of optical power and between 7uJ and 20kJ of pulse energy.

The fast 100kHz sampling rate is claimed to ensure that the pulse measurements are accurate and that any real fluctuations in the CW power are not ignored.

The meter incorporates various filtering to make the reading more stable.

Advanced features include highly visible colour display, graphing, strip chart display, statistics, data storage via internal memory or USB flash drive and an analogue-output interface.

The meter does not have an internal fan to cool the instrument, which is said to be a distinct advantage in applications where the vibration of a fan motor could interfere with stability in an experimental setup.

The 1928-C optical meter is also equipped with several environment-friendly features; the circuitry allows much lower-energy consumption compared to the 1936-C model.

It also features a standby mode for further energy savings when the meter is not actively used.

The optical meter can be easily reactivated with the press of any button on the front panel.

It can also display irradiance in ‘sun’ units, enabling photovoltaic researchers to use the power meter as a complementary tool to a reference solar cell.

Developed specifically for users who do not need to measure extremely low light levels, the 1928-C costs USD2,495 (GBP1,720).
