The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has designed a filter cartridge to boost the accuracy of particulate-emissions measurement, especially those carried out to the BS EN 13284-1 low-dust standard.

It supports the filter throughout the sampling and weighing process, removing the need for handling.

The company claims that it is still light enough to be weighed with the filter and robust enough to be used repeatedly.

It was developed after a study for the Environment Agency showed that loss of filter material during handling was a key source of inaccuracy when measuring low levels of particulate.

The cartridge, which has been field tested, consists of a filter mesh support and two retaining rings made from chemically etched Grade 2 titanium.

NPL will display a prototype of its filter cartridge at MCerts 2009 (Stand 23) on 29-30 April at the Bretby Conference Centre in Staffordshire.
