Simrit O-rings are made of a high-performance elastomer and perform two functions in SF6 gas-insulated switchgears.

First, they reliably seal the insulating gas, sulphur hexafluoride, even under extreme conditions, meeting the environmental requirements of the Kyoto Protocol.

Second, they protect live parts against environmental influences.

In this way, Simrit O-rings are a combination of maximum personal protection and long-life operation.

Gas-insulated medium and high-voltage switchgears make tough demands on seals because the live functional parts used in this technology are separated from the ambient atmosphere by being sealed in welded, gas-tight stainless steel containers.

The mechanical and electrical ducts between the inner chamber, which is filled with the insulating gas, sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), and the outside are sealed with ISC O-rings.

With these O-rings, the maximum operating leakage rates of less than 0.1 per cent per year for the insulating gas SF6 can be reached.

The high-performance elastomer developed specially by Simrit for this purpose, 70 XIIR 232175, meets these requirements better than the EPDM that was used previously.

O-rings made of this material are suitable for use as static seals at temperatures as low as -60C.

The material’s long-term sealing performance also has a very low compression set and excellent chemical resistance of the top EPDM materials.

However, the 70 XIIR 232175 has an improved permeation rate for gases such as N2, He, and SF6.

It is used to make O-rings and precision mouldings in a variety of designs.

These seals can help reduce emissions from indoor and outdoor units during normal operation and throughout the expected switchgear life of up to 40 years.
