Ocean Optics has introduced a range of low-cost CMOS-detector-based spectrometers that are suitable for embedding into OEM devices.

Despite a tiny footprint – less than 2in (40 x 42mm) square and 1in (24mm) in height – the STS range provides a performance comparable to larger systems, according to the company.

For example, it offers a full spectral analysis with low stray light, a high signal-to-noise ratio of more than 1,500:1 and a typical optical resolution of ~1.5nm (FWHM).

STS is suitable for a range of VIS-NIR applications, including the characterisation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the absorbance/transmittance of various samples.

It is also suitable for OEM applications where one or more wavelengths are being monitored and highly reproducible results are necessary.

The STS microspectrometers are available in standard models with 350-800nm and 650-1100nm wavelength coverage.

The customisation of wavelength range, entrance aperture and other optical bench accessories is available for high-volume and OEM customers.

STS incorporates a built-in shutter for making dark measurements.

Operating software is priced separately and provides a full range of spectroscopic functions as well as control of the shutter.

Packages for developing customised software for the STS range are also available.

At the heart of the STS is a 1,024-element CMOS detector in a crossed Czerny Turner optical bench.

The bench is distinguished by specially designed collimating and focusing mirrors and a 600-line-per-milimetre groove density grating.

STS offers 14-bit analogue-to-digital resolution and a low power consumption of just 0.75W.

With customisation of the entrance aperture, it also offers optical resolution.

Our OEM capabilities

Do you have a great idea for a commercial product that uses optics? Build on our success and bring your unique product to volume markets. Our specialised OEM engineering team will work closely together with your engineering team to ensure the best set-up for your demands.

Our success

Recognized as the inventor of miniature fibre optic spectroscopy, we’ve sold more than 150,000 spectrometers worldwide since 1989. As a result of the dramatic reduction in size and cost, applications once deemed too costly or impractical using conventional spectrometers were not only feasible, but practical. Nowadays our spectrometers can be found anywhere: on treetops in jungles, on oil rigs at sea, on rocket ships in space and even inside the human body.
