The XZR500 oxygen monitor from Michell Instruments is being used by a manufacturer of organic fertiliser to monitor oxygen levels in its composting process.

The process reduces the time taken to break down animal dung into a usable form from 21 days to 24 hours. The XZR500 forms part of the control system.

The XZR500 helps to ensure the levels of oxygen in the composting chamber remain at the optimum level for maximum performance. Its probe is placed directly into the air outlet and an ejector is used to pull a sample out to the sensor housed in the ex-situ head.

The previous analyser used in the process had needed a sampling system with a more complex installation and routine maintenance. The original sensor used was an electrochemical cell that depleted over time, needed periodic replacement and added to the total cost of ownership.

  • The XZR500 can withstand the aggressive conditions in the composting chamber: the chicken and cow excrement used as a compost feedstock produce high levels of ammonia; humidity is high; and temperatures range between 20°C and 70°C.
