The Watson-Marlow Pumps Group provided MSD Animal Health with a Flexicon PD12P peristaltic dispensing pump and FS10 semi-automatic tabletop cap crimping machine for the production of its animal health vaccines.

Watson-Marlow Pumps Group worked with Extract Technology to provide liquid filling and capping units for MSD Animal Health (MSDAH).

MSDAH develops and manufactures veterinary medicines and services. It wanted to increase its capacity for processing bacteria and starting materials for the production of animal health vaccines, while keeping the vial-filling process sterile and isolated.

Watson-Marlow liaised with isolator unit manufacturer Extract Technology and decided that the solution was a system with a Flexicon PD12P peristaltic dispensing pump at its centre. To keep the pump drive and control panel situated outside of the isolator and the pumphead inside, a bespoke flange was manufactured.

Additionally, a Flexicon FS10 semi-automatic tabletop cap crimping machine was also supplied, which is used to seal up to 1,000 vials an hour.

Key benefits of product application

  • The pump dispenses a mixture of bacterial seed culture and excipient (an inactive vehicle for the drug) into small capacity vials.
  • The peristaltic action of the Flexicon PD12P ensures that the product only comes into contact with the sterile tubing and the filling nozzle.
  • No cleaning validation is required.
  • It has a filling range of 0.1–250ml and an accuracy of ±0.5 per cent.
  • Liquid products can be controlled via reversing, filling speed or acceleration.
  • The pump’s control panel allows the operator to start/stop the unit using a foot-switch, while their hands and arms are involved in processes within the isolator.
  • The controller is based on a a Flexicon MC12P master control unit and is connected to a printer for data recording.
  • All of the Flexicon (a division of the Watson-Marlow Pumps Group) products used are designed to operate within sterile environments.
