The rapid, small-scale oxidation test (RSSOT) is a method of evaluating the stability of liquid fuels, greases and lubricants. Knowledge of oxygen stability is often essential when developing and evaluating fuels, especially for those working with biofuels. Anton Paar has introduced the PetroOxy test device designed for the oxidation stability testing of gasoline, diesel, biodiesel and blends.

The PetroOxy unit was designed to improve on established methods, in order to increase operator safety when performing oxidation stability tests on petrol (ASTM D525, ISO 7536), diesel, biodiesel (EN 14112) and biodiesel blends (EN 15751). These traditional methods are said to be too time consuming and labour intensive to be used for spot checking product quality or for process monitoring and control.

The test device also works on very rapid test cycles — typically less than one hour — but takes only five minutes to clean between tests thanks to a simple cleansing and preparation process. This means the operation timescale is dramatically reduced. Technical improvements mean that testing is now even more reliable and reproducible.
