The Pipecutter plasma-arc machine, developed by Messer Cutting Systems for the streetlamp production industry and other manufacturing sectors, incorporates the Hepcomotion HDS2 linear motion system.

The pipe profiling machine is built to specification to meet different pipe length requirements and can be equipped with a series of options to suit the application.

These options include the incorporation of a drilling head, which affects machine dynamics.

The increased loads involved require the incorporation of a heavier-duty linear motion system and the Hepcomotion HDS2 has proved to be the most appropriate solution.

The basic purpose of the Pipecutter in its principle market is to cut an inspection door and cable entry into the street-lighting column.

Gary Buck, project manager at Messer Cutting Systems, said: ’Some customers additionally want to drill holes at different positions on the column to later mount fixtures.

’So we fit twist drill heads to the machine for that purpose,’ he added.

While the standard Hepcomotion GV3 linear guide is suitable for the task of carrying and positioning the plasma-arc cutting head on the Pipecutter, the addition of the twin drill heads pushes its capacity.

’We needed a strong linear beam and slides that would easily withstand the extra loads and provide good positioning accuracy,’ said Buck.

This is vital to ensure that there is no beam deflection and that there is good repeatability when drilling the fixing holes.

The Hepcomotion HDS2 proved to be best solution.

The products in the company’s range provide a choice of options and include single-piece rings measuring up to 1.8m in diameter.

This programme is complemented by the Hepcomotion MHD maximum heavy-duty system, whose bearing blocks each have a maximum load capacity of five tonnes.

Designing a unique engineering principle and making it a commercial success is quite an accomplishment.  Developing that concept and embracing complementary technologies to the point where the business becomes a world leader in its field takes that achievement into a different league.  HepcoMotion has achieved both and in 2009 celebrates 40th year of trading.

Today HepcoMotion is one of the world’s foremost innovators and manufacturers of linear motion technology.  And this can be attributed to the important tenet – continued investment in its people processes and products.  This has allowed the company to grow even at times of economical difficulty.

Although its range of individual, linear motion products remains an important part of its business the growth area for HepcoMotion in recent years is in specials and assemblies.  Almost one fifth of its shop floor space is devoted to assembly and the company has invested heavily in flexible manufacturing to ensure that even last minute changes can be accommodated to customer specification.

Constantly re-assessing its strengths against changing market demands continues to provide HepcoMotion with the momentum for business growth.  The culture of ongoing investment has certainly worked well throughout its first 40 years and will continue to underpin its business in the decades to come.
