ARRK R D, based in Basildon, Essex, has used product lifecycle management (PLM) software from Dassault Systèmes (DS) to design and produce driverless vehicles that run on a dedicated lightweight guideway at London’s Heathrow Airport.

For the Ultra Personal Rapid Transportation (PRT) programme, the company used DS’s Catia, Enovia, Simulia and 3DVIA software to deliver a prototype-to-launch service.

According to Jason Roberts, director at ARRK, the project included the development of 21 initial vehicles that run on a dedicated track, much of which is elevated.

Each Ultra pod — designed to carry passengers to their destinations at up to 40km/h — features an aluminium chassis, vacuum-formed and acrylic-coated panels, air conditioning, in-vehicle LED screens displaying journey information, an alarm system and cameras.

Key benefits of product application

  • Using DS software enabled the company to carry out prototyping, tooling, testing and surfacing on a single software platform.
  • Suspension durability testing was carried out using the Abaqus software, which helped to provide the vehicles with accurate tracking characteristics.
  • ARRK was able to cut tooling direct from 3D Catia models and to accept third-party software input from stylists and others in the supply chain, incorporating it to develop 3D data.
  • The use of PLM software has aided the Ultra PRT project by providing a flexible, technically viable tool that can deliver advanced transport solutions, said Roberts.
