Specialist pumping solutions supplier Verder and chemical dosing expert Naiad have supplied Kilroot power station with a low-maintenance dosing solution.

Kilroot power station has recently installed a Naiad copperas saturator with Verder Dura pumps to accommodate copperas crystal and generate dilute ferrous sulphate solution for dosing.

Phil Kerrison, managing director of Naiad and the designer of the process, said: ‘Dosing the intake water at coal-fired power stations can protect the condenser tubes against corrosion.

‘The addition of ferrous iron to seawater causes an effective protective film to establish as Fe2+ is oxidised to colloidal iron, which adheres to the inside walls of the tubes,’ he added.

Mike Heap, sales director at Verder, said: ‘With the Naiad copperas actuator now in place, the process is automatic and requires little manual intervention.

‘It has performed well since it was installed some months ago and has enabled one-tonne loads of copperas crystal to be safely employed.

‘At Kilroot, the one-tonne bags are lifted into position above the saturator with a crane system and copperas crystal is progressively fed into the reception tank by releasing a draw cord at the base of the bag.

‘In Naiad’s process, the crystal is continuously dissolved in water and dosed to the works inlet by dedicated Verder Dura pumps, with similar pumps being used to generate the dilute solution.

‘The process is regulated by a digital dose controller, which is set up and operated by way of a touch-screen HMI.

‘The site operator simply enters the weight of chemical delivered to the unit and starts the dosing process by processing the start button on the dosing panel.’

A pump solution for every application

Peristaltic hose pumps are very versatile however generally they are for heavy-duty applications such as abrasive slurry, high solid content or high suction lift requirements found in industrial, sewage and mining applications. Our VF range features the world’s largest ID hose pump for the most demanding applications.

Advantages of Verderflex Peristaltic pumps:
✔ Ideal solution for pumping liquids and dosing chemicals
✔ Verder’s peristaltic pumps can pump abrasive, highly corrosive, viscous, high density and shear sensitive products.
✔ Verderflex® peristaltic pumps are used in many industries including: water and wastewater, mining, food & beverage, chemical, pharmaceuticals, and the oil and gas industry.

With the absence of mechanical seals, the Verdermag® range eliminates the danger of abrasive wear from the drive shaft and seal faces and instead uses an o-ring sealing system. As the pump has no vulnerability to containing the media, it can provide reliable handling of hazardous fluids such as volatile, corrosive and toxic chemicals with no risk to employees, the environment or surrounding equipment. The range encompasses compact low flow/head pumps commonly used in OEM systems through to high flow, heavy duty pumps rated up to 200 bar. For compatibility with all types of chemicals the range is available with both metallic and non-metallic materials such as ETFE and a range of alloys. Custom pump specifications are available.

Advantages of Verdermag centrifugal pumps:
✔ Low flow OEM systems such as circulation of acids and solvents
✔ Transfer of industrial chemicals such as CIP, Acids, Solvents
✔ Thermal oil circulation between -100oC and +200oC
✔ Circulation in high pressure systems such as nanofiltration of industrial effluent, desalination and fast-loop systems.

Verderhus screw centrifugal pumps combine the best features of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps to define a new standard for low head, high flow pumping. Verderhus® pumps transfer your product gently and efficiently. The open impeller allows large solids to be easily pumped that reduces the risk of cavitation, which can cause serious damage to a pump and to the production process. A Verderhus pump will lower both energy use and ownership costs.

Advantages of Verderhus screw channel pumps:
✔ Clog free operation, reliability for your process
✔ Highly efficient, low energy consumption
✔ Solids pumping up to 13% of the flow volume
✔ Low-shear, gentle pumping action, results in less damage to the product
✔ Minimal wear, even with abrasive fluids, longest life time
Typical application areas for Verderhus screw channel pumps
✔ Thick sludge in wastewater treatment
✔ Macerated food waste
✔ Sewage waste
✔ Circulation of lime chemical
✔ Paper pulp
✔ Mining
✔ Production of biogas
✔ Power stations
