The Challenge
Hydrofluoric acid is well known for its ability to dissolve many materials including glass. Consequently many traditional ‘chemically resistant’ materials such as stainless steel are not suitable for use in tank cleaning applications where hydrofluoric acid exposure is likely. A further problem is that in many applications hydrofluoric acid can cause crystalisation of waste products onto surfaces which could potentially clog and block nozzles on cleaning systems.

In this particular cleaning application required a wide cleaning diameter nearly 4 meters (tank volume 38m3), so using static nozzles was not feasible. The potential problem of crystalisation also meant that the small orifices found in most typical spray balls were likely to be an issue. While most spinning or rotary tank cleaners could achieve the required reach, their metallic components would not withstand the challenges associated with cleaning these tanks.

The Solution

The HydroWhirl Poseidon is one of the few all PTFE tank cleaners on the market and is available from THE SPRAY NOZZLE PEOPLE. With absolutely no metal parts the all PTFE construction provides excellent resistance to even high concentrations of hydrofluoric acid. Furthermore, the added benefit of PTFE being extremely slippery, ensures one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any material which means that crystal deposits are far less likely to adhere to the tank cleaners surfaces.

The only slight problem on this application was the need to adapt the standard BSP threaded connections with those that were compatible with the existing pipework. However, once a simple thread adaptation was made the HydroWhirl Poseidon tank cleaners proved to be an ideal solution to a challenging application.

The Benefits

In addition to the essential requirement of chemical and corrosion resistance, the other design features of the HydroWhirl system ensure rapid cleaning and less water consumption as they operate at lower pressures compared to static tank wash systems. Also, connectivity should be simple and flexible given the possible variations at each site and this is helped by the 3 options of; pipe, tube or DIN clip-on, along with threaded connections available on request. Also, the use of FDA approved materials means the cleaners are ideal for use in clean-in-place (CIP) applications. Also, because the spray characteristics of the HydroWhirl system are designed for slow spinning and longer spray dwell time on the target surface, the result is increased impact compared to conventional rotating designs.

Customers include the largest engineering, food processing, chemical and petrochemical companies in the world as well as a vast array of SMEs. Whether big or small our customers can rely upon decades of combined experience to ensure the correct nozzle is selected no matter the application.

SNP are the leading distributor of standard and custom-designed spraying solutions for a wide range of industries and applications. All customers’ orders are handled quickly and efficiently from our dedicated stock-holding facilities, and we support our entire product range with in-depth technical and application support. SNP is an exclusive distributor for spray nozzle specialist, BETE Fog Nozzle Inc., metal finishing spraying systems manufacturer, Uni-Spray Systems Inc. and specialist paper industry nozzle manufacturer, ML Gatewood. We are also the distributors for the Orbitor range of tank cleaning system for UK manufacturer Dasic.

Our history
Our business started in 2000 as Bete Ltd  a joint venture with Bete Fog Nozzle (a leading US manufacturer of spry nozzles) to start with the Bete brand was the only product we sold. Over the years we have added other nozzle brands to our range and have expanded the territories that we represent Bete Fog Nozzle in to include France and Spain.

As we expanded our products beyond the Bete brand it became sensible to change the trading name of our company to The Spray Nozzle People. The Bete brand remains absolutely core to our offering and Bete Fog Nozzle Inc. still retain a 20% stake in our business

Our philosophy
To offer a high quality, comprehensive product line with added value – the highest possible standard of service, technical knowledge and expertise. At SNP we are committed to maintaining our leadership role by the introduction of new products, improvement of overall efficiencies, and above all – by listening and responding to our customers’ needs.

What we sell
Our standard range of industrial spray nozzles consists of thousands of different options in many different materials including; Brass, Stainless Steels, Hastelloy, Stellite and Tantalum. However, over 65% of production is geared to custom solutions.

Added to this is our range of economical, customised, non-corrosive nozzle systems, couplers and adaptors in PVC, CPVC, Polypropylene, PVDF and Stainless Steel that are ideally suited (although are in no way restricted) to pre-treatment applications. But what we really sell is our expertise in spray nozzles. We advise our customers as to which of our products will be optimum for their specific spray application.
