Doosan distributor Mills CNC has launched the Puma 700XLM and Puma 700XLY lathes for heavy duty machining of large, heavy and long components found in the oil/gas and power-generation sectors.

The lathes have a Meehanite cast-iron construction and widely-spaced, induction-hardened and precision-ground guideways.

They have been designed for machining of components up to 5m in length.

Both machines are able to support large chucks (up to 32in) and have a bar working diameter (164mm) capacity.

They will support a workpiece up to 8.9tons between chuck and tailstock.

Machining productivity and flexibility is enhanced by the Puma machines’ 1,140mm swing-over-bed and 1,000mm swing-over-carriage capabilities and their large turning diameter capacities of 900mm for the Puma XLM and 750mm for the Puma 700XLY.

The Pumas are equipped with high-torque/gearbox-driven main spindles (45kW 1,200rev/min) and are suitable for heavy stock removal and high power at low rev/min for machining tough alloys.

Power is transmitted to the spindle via a three-speed gearbox, enabling smooth and stable changes in speed.

The gearboxes are mounted behind the headstock, thereby helping to eliminate thermal effects, and the machines’ spindles are also supported by a thermally optimised configuration of lifetime-lubricated bearings (cylindrical roller bearings and angular thrust bearings) that also includes a 240mm-diameter front bearing for extra rigidity and to withstand heavy loads.

The Puma 700XLM and XLY lathes have a 12-station, heavy duty turret with a large Curvic-coupling diameter that accommodates high-rigidity BMT 85P rotary toolholders with up to 32mm-diameter tool shank.

Driven tooling capacity (11kW 3,000rev/min), exists on both machines enabling complex parts to be machined (turned, milled, drilled and so on) quickly, from start to finish, in a single set-up.

Additional productivity and manufacturing flexibility is available with the Puma 700 XLY thanks to its Y-axis functionality (+/-100mm).

This enables keyways in large shafts to be accurately contour-milled to size and also provides the capability to thread mill large holes in flange-type parts.

Both lathes, as expected considering their size and purpose, have a programmable tailstock (200mm quill travel) to support the machining of long workpieces.

The lathes are equipped with the Fanuc F32IT control, and the incorporation of Manual Guide I and Doosan Easy Operation software packages help ensure fast set-ups and programming plus improved monitoring of machining operations.
