Citizen’s micro-machining R04-VI, a 4mm capacity, six-axis CNC sliding-head turn-milling centre, can now be specified with programmable high-speed drilling/milling spindles capable of 100,000rev/min.

This allows it to take maximum advantage of the latest ultra-fine coated cutting tools and perform operations such as high-speed thread whirling on diameters smaller than 1mm.

Now available through Citizen Machinery UK of Watford, the R04 and larger capacity R07 combine super precision ‘one-hit’ machining cycles with highly optimised cycle times on often difficult-to-machine materials.

They have been widely specified in the precision machining markets of watch making, medical and miniature electronics sectors.

Central to the R04’s success was the development of high-speed linear motor technology to remove any likelihood of deflection and backlash from the power transmission system and the ability of the drive to enable the structure of the slideway to be optimised for super precision cycles in a compact (560 x 1265mm floor requirement) and rigid structure.

Up to three high-speed spindles can be mounted in the driven-tool positions, enabling end and cross-working.

Using special adapters allows an angled approach to be made to a component feature within the same cycle.

The spindle and its electronic control are fully integrated into the CNC system of the R04 for positioning, spindle start and stop.

It can also be preset for the designated speed.

There is a range of spindles available to suit the application, including a higher torque variant.

A recent example of the level of productivity gain was demonstrated in the milling of a TORX female drive socket on a bone screw made from 316 stainless steel.

It saved 70 per cent over a standard milling-spindle application.

The 0.8mm diameter four-flute end mill was run at 35,800rev/min and a feed rate of 0.005mm/rev to produce a clean, burr-free milled finish on the component.

The Citizen R04-VI has a 20,000rev/min ceramic bearing main spindle and 8,000rev/min subspindle and has up to 13 tool positions, of which five are for turning and three driven.

The toolpost design allows two tools to be engaged with the workpiece simultaneously on components up to 40mm long, making the machine considerably faster than a conventional cam auto when producing small parts in a single cycle.

Accuracy is high with increments of 0.0001mm in each axis and repeatability through high-precision glass-scale encoders is one micron.

The linear-drive systems ensure rapid acceleration to a maximum rapid traverse rate of 20m/min.

It has a range of machines having a maximum bar capacity between 4 mm on the compact micro-machining capable Citizen R04 to 32 mm on the top of the range Citizen M32-VII which has the added capability of two Y-axis cross-feeds.   

The M32 can carry up to 80 tools, of which 20 can be driven, and can cut with three tools simultaneously giving low cycle times and high levels of productivity.  Also, fully automated unmanned cycles can be utilised through an integrated gantry option and conveyor system that helps ensure damage free parts during uninterrupted batch production.  A high pressure 2,000 psi CoolBlaster coolant system is a further option to optimise swarf control, tool life and machining difficult materials.

Following the acquisition in Japan in 2008 of 65 per cent shares in Miyano, the fixed head turning centre specialist, the two companies are maintaining their separate high profile brand names utilising a single sales operation.  However, turn-milling solutions from bar up to 64 mm diameter can now be provided.  In addition, with the Miyano range of turning and turn-milling machines for chucking operations, cell-type applications can now be accommodated with a wide range of automation options.
