The Canolfan Gorseinon centre in Wales has cut its water bills by 65 per cent and its monthly water bills to GBP175 and is saving GBP8,000 per annum thanks to a Stormsaver rainwater harvesting system.

The centre uses a below-ground, pressurised system, which works by collecting rainwater, storing and filtering it and reusing it in place of mains water for the flushing of toilets and WCs, for example.

‘Being a multi-purpose facility for the local community, we often have large numbers of people passing through, which ultimately has an impact on the amount of water we use,’ said Kelvin Jones, manager of the Gorseinon Development Trust, which runs the building.

The centre also incorporates a number of other environmental features, including heating via a biomass boiler and a natural ventilation system using ‘earth pipe’ technology.
