Mentor Engineering has announced satellite modem integration with its Ranger in-vehicle computer, designed to boost the connectivity of the work-alone monitoring safety solution.

Mentor relies on the Iridium network for global satellite coverage, including oceans, airways and polar regions.

Iridium’s constellation consists of 66 low-Earth-orbiting (LEO), cross-linked satellites operating as a fully meshed network and supported by multiple in-orbit spares.

Mentor’s satellite modem interface ensures that Ranger in-vehicle computers are always in contact with the office, improving safety and connectivity.

This allows for confident monitoring and communication with workers at high risk or isolated sites.

The satellite interface allows Ranger to operate in either cellular or satellite mode.

Ranger will automatically switch between cellular and satellite networks depending on the available coverage.

Additionally, Ranger can be configured to send only essential information when in satellite coverage, thereby minimising the amount of data and the cost of sending data over the satellite network.

The satellite modem interface complements Mentor’s work-alone monitoring solution developed for the oil and gas industry.

Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) lets office staff effectively monitor the work-alone status of all vehicles on their computer screen.

Information for each vehicle is clearly listed including the vehicle’s duty status and a countdown to the next required check-in.

Intrinsically safe work-alone pendants allow field workers to check in with the click of a button.

The office is automatically alerted if the pendant has been motionless for a specified amount of time or if an operator misses a scheduled check-in.

Mentor’s work-alone monitoring solution is part of an oil-and-gas software suite suited entitled Mentor Streets Oil and Gas.

This robust software can improve operational efficiency in work order management, field operator safety, billing and data entry, as well as fleet monitoring and maintenance.
