Power Integrations has published two standby power supply reference designs – targeted at applications that require more than 90 per cent full-load efficiency – based on its new Topswitch-JX IC range.

Topswitch-JX devices feature multi-mode control, minimising the power wasted in standby and delivering maximum efficiency over a range of operating loads.

The new reference designs are targeted at applications that require more than 90 per cent full-load efficiency to meet standards such as the 80 PlusA Gold or Silver PC specifications, EuP Lot 6 standby rules or the new California requirements for TV power usage.

The DER-246 is a general-purpose evaluation platform and describes a PC standby power supply based on the Topswitch-JX TOP265EG, which operates from 110VDC to 400VDC input and provides more than 91 per cent efficiency at 12V/15W.

The DER-247, based on the Topswitch-JX TOP264EG, describes a supply for a similar application operating from 110VDC to 400VDC input and providing more than 87 per cent efficiency at 5V/10W.

For TV and other consumer products, the designs make 20mW available to the load for just 100mW of input power.

David New, product marketing manager of Power Integrations, said: ‘More and more power supply designs require very good light-load efficiency performance and, with PC power supplies moving to the 80 Plus Silver and Gold specifications, the PC-standby portion of the design needs to be exceptionally efficient all the way from light load to full load.

‘The innovative control technique and power Mosfet technology of Topswitch-JX allows it to deliver the performance needed for 80 Plus Gold designs, saving component cost in other portions of the PC power supply,’ he added.

Topswitch-JX is a highly integrated range of 16 power conversion ICs incorporating a 725V power Mosfet for use in fly-back power supplies.

The new Topswitch-JX multi-mode control algorithm maximises power efficiency across the entire load range.

High efficiency at full power minimises the power wasted during normal operation and reduces the complexity and expense of thermal management on the system.

At low power levels, high efficiency enables adapters with extremely low no-load consumption and maximises the power available to the system in standby mode for applications constrained by standards and regulatory controls.
