Invensys has released its Simsci-Esscor Romeo refinery software, which enables refinery-wide process modelling and optimisation as a component of the Infusion enterprise control system (ECS).

The software extends the company’s Romeo optimisation software using a complete set of rigorous kinetic reactor models, under license from Exxonmobil Research and Engineering.

Invensys said Romeo software can help refiners achieve productivity and control excellence because it allows them to improve crude selection, evaluate crude supply opportunities and reliably predict refinery yields and qualities to determine the potential for improving yields of higher-value products and processing lower grades or crude.

Harpreet Gulati, product director at Invensys Operations Management, said: ‘This latest release of the Romeo refinery software allows refineries to rigorously simulate and optimise the entirety of their operations in detail, from the crude oil tank farm to final product blending.

‘Companies can utilise a Romeo solution to get a complete understanding of the true profitability of their refineries, as well as understand the interaction between upstream units that have downstream constraints,’ Gulati added.

The Romeo refinery software offers a scalable software solution that allows incremental, expandable deployment within a common architecture, helping to ensure rapid return on investment.

It offers refinery-wide modelling to identify the most profitable processing of different crude oil feedstocks, which can help ensure the highest-value product pools.

In addition, it offers reuse of individual unit models for performance monitoring or online optimisation of individual units and distillate pools.

This release of the Romeo refinery software incorporates Exxonmobil Research and Engineering’s rigorous kinetic models, which enable detailed modelling and optimisation of FCC, reformer, HF alkylation and sulphuric acid alkylation units.

Additional models for hydrocracking, fuels and lubes hydrotreating, coking, isomerisation, visbreaking and other units will be available in the near future.

All models are available in open equation format, enabling quick and robust modelling inside the Romeo refinery software environment.

The Romeo refinery software is based on Invensys Operations Management’s Romeo optimisation suite.

Romeo software technology provides a common platform to optimise other aspects of refinery profitability, such as refinery-wide mass balance, utilities optimisation, naphtha management and hydrogen optimisation.

Its baseline features can act as a springboard for additional functionality, such as Wonderware Intelligence, an enterprise manufacturing intelligence product that can be layered on top of existing Romeo installations to create dashboards and monitor key performance indicators.
