Electric actuators supplied by Rotork are being installed on the Royal Navy’s new 920ft-long aircraft carriers — HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales — for duties involving seawater, fresh water, chilled water, fuel systems and fire-fighting systems.

Rotork was chosen to supply the actuators thanks to its ability to deliver all the specified requirements with commercial off-the-shelf products — including Profibus two-wire digital network connectivity, proprietary non-intrusive configuration and data transfer technologies and sophisticated valve diagnostic information facilitated by integral actuator data loggers.

For applications that are important for the integrity of the vessels’ hulls, the company is supplying IQTN direct-drive quarter-turn actuators, which have been developed specifically to meet the demands of naval marine duties.

The remaining applications will be operated by Rompak actuators, which have developed to provide the marine industry with a lightweight and compact solution for the operation of quarter-turn valves and dampers.

Key benefits of product application

  • The Rotork actuators were chosen partly thanks to their low-maintenance demands.
  • The IQTN actuators offer excellent shock tolerance and their overall size has been reduced to lower their centre of gravity and to account for shipboard space restraints.
  • IQTN actuator setting and configuration is performed non-intrusively using a handheld setting tool and a two-way wireless link.
  • The integral data logger keeps a record of historical operating activity, including valve torque curves, which can be downloaded and analysed with Rotork software for maintenance planning or to identify and diagnose potential operating issues; the same software enables all setup and configuration information to be reviewed, reconfigured and then uploaded back into the actuator.
  • All the Rotork actuator designs provide the option of local and remote control with a manual override.
  • For the provision of comprehensive control and feedback data about the valves, the actuators are equipped with Rotork’s Profibus-DP card, which supports standard DP-V0 cyclic data exchange and DP-V1 acyclic data exchange for diagnosis, setup and historical data.

Rotork is the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of actuators for isolating, regulating and modulating valve duties, valve control systems, valve gearboxes and accessories, serving the international oil and gas, power generation, water and effluent treatment, processing and environmental industries. Capabilities encompass actuators and control systems for new plants, plant extensions and upgrades. Rotork’s global network of more than 350 offices and representatives provides a localised single source for these products, supported by life-of-plant maintenance, repair and upgrade services.
