Sapphire optical fibre from Laser Components can transmit over wavelengths ranging from 750–3,500nm and is particularly suitable for industrial applications in combustion cylinders and turbine engines, for example.

In these applications, the fibre can monitor fuel constituents, contaminants and combustion chemistry, allowing the control of fuel mixture, flow and timing with the optical signal being fed outside for spectral analysis.

With its melting point of more than 2,000°C, sapphire fibre can be used in high-temperature sensing applications and in sampling optical signals in extreme environments.

It can also be used in fluorine plasmas utilised in semiconductor processing and is suitable for 2,940nm Er.YAG lasers, making it particularly useful in medical and dental surgery.
