Product Details Supplier Info More products

Schaeffler has developed a grease sensor designed for monitoring critical plant and machinery located in difficult-to-access areas, such as wind turbines and automated assembly lines.

The sensor, which is positioned directly in the grease-immersed rolling bearing, has an electronic evaluation system that enables the condition of the grease to be monitored while the bearings are operating.

This allows the schedule for replacing rolling-bearing grease to be planned precisely into maintenance schedules, as any changes in grease condition are detected early and before any damage can be caused to the bearings.

Generally, Schaeffler claims, users could only gather information about the condition of the grease inside a bearing by taking a sample and then conducting costly, time-consuming analyses of that sample in a laboratory — however, this grease sensor enables grease to be replaced according to the actual operating requirements of the bearing and not according to any pre-defined time periods.

Key benefits

  • Demand-based lubrication reduces money spent on lubricants
  • Replacement parts and maintenance are also reduced
  • Environment benefits from a lower volume of lubricant
  • Operational downtime reduced
  • Process efficiencies and machine utilisation
