Schuler has received an order for a 1,200tonf screw press from Umformtechnik Radebeul, which already uses four machines supplied by Muller Weingarten, a Schuler subsidiary.

The new press will ensure a consistently high quality standard in future for forged aluminium parts, according to Schuler.

Due to its specific flow properties, aluminium requires specialised manufacturing equipment, especially in the field of forging.

The main focus is on ensuring the die contacts the metal at a controlled impact speed.

All components of the machine – from the press itself to the dies and lubrication medium – must be adapted to the special properties of aluminium.

Schuler’s experts have installed four new lines at Umformtechnik Radebeul in the last eight years, with a fifth to follow in autumn 2010.

The new line will also be exactly tailored to the requirements of aluminium forming and, together with the Forge Control System (FCS), guarantee high process reliability.

One of the key features responsible for the high performance of the screw press with a press force of 12,000kN (1,200tonf) is its frequency controlled direct drive system.

It precisely controls the desired forming speed and therefore guarantees the quality of the aluminium parts.

In addition, the FCS press control system monitors the complete process and stores all production data.

With the aid of a touch screen, the operator can check the production process and access extensive documentation.
