An offshore oil industry subcontractor has utilised Trim SC617 semi-synthetic coolant from Master Chemical in order to improve product finish and extend tool life, while making significant savings compared with the use of mineral-oil-based coolant.

The customer manufactures components made primarily from Inconel, titanium and stainless steel.

Trim SC617, which was recommended to the customer, features an extreme pressure additive that enhances cutting performance for hard-to-machine materials and has a low foam profile that enables its use in through-tool machining applications.

Key benefits of product application

  • Cost to production of the mineral-oil-based product, based on 15 drums per year, was £8,565; in comparison, a third of the Trim SC617 was required to do the same job — a total cost of £2,826.
  • There was no loss of performance using the semi-synthetic coolant compared with the competitor product.
  • Trim SC617 was found to be much cleaner as it rejects tramp oil more efficiently — therefore skimmers and coalescers could work with greater efficiently.
  • Concern over the higher cost per 204-litre drum of Trim SC617 was eliminated as low consumption is another benefit of the coolant, according to Master Chemical.

The Coolant Management Company

Master Chemical develops and markets a comprehensive metalworking fluid
programme.  Its products are cutting and grinding fluids, cutting oils,
washing and cleaning compounds and rust preventatives.  They are all
marketed under the brand name, TRIM.

Since 1990 Master Chemical Europe has provided a dedicated sales and
manufacturing service for Europe.  In that time it has also become the
centre of excellence for product development to meet the specific production
needs of European manufacturers.

Its research has led to the introduction of a range of water- and vegetable
ester based formulations that are non-hazardous yet offer superb production
performance.

The need for this type of metalworking fluid is driven by EU regulation and
as a result Master Chemical Europe is now the leading manufacturer of
application-specific metalworking fluids.

When used in conjunction with Master Chemical’s trademark coolant management
strategies, these products provide optimum productivity and significant
operating cost reduction.

To provide greater capacity for this work the company recently moved to new
premises that include a laboratory that is three times bigger than its
forerunner.

Master Chemical Europe is now responsible for supporting an ever-expanding
distributor network, extending from Portugal in the south to Russia and
Scandinavia in the north and east.
