Smartplug Systems uses thermoplastic alloy from RTP to manufacture 50A power system

Smartplug Systems has used a thermoplastic material developed by custom compounder RTP Company to create a 50A version of its 30A Smartplug power system for use in the marine and RV and EMS vehicle markets.

In marine environments, the power system is designed to eliminate shore power failure and fires by minimising the tendencies towards loose electrical connections, corrosion, overheating and other problems inherent in many connector designs.

To develop the system, Smartplug Systems needed a material that would provide the necessary flame retardancy and impact resistance required for a larger, heavier 50A design.

RTP produced an RTP 2000 series custom polycarbonate/polybutylene terephthalate (PC/PBT) alloy that incorporated glass-fibre reinforcement along with a flame retardant to meet the UL94 V-0 flame rating and an ultraviolet stabiliser to achieve a UL746C f1 outdoor suitability rating.

  • RTP provided Smartplug Systems with the strength and flame retardancy it required for the larger, heavier power system.
  • RTP was able to custom-match the company’s existing vibrant orange colour, even with all the modifiers.
  • The 50A power system is now meeting approvals and heading to market; as a result, Smartplug Systems is planning to switch its 30A connector to the RTP material to gain a higher margin of performance.
  • The company has a 100A version in the works and will be looking to RTP for another custom-engineered thermoplastic material.
