Germany’s Ritter Sport has revealed it uses the digital prototyping of Autodesk Inventor software to quickly change its chocolate bar designs in response to consumer demand for new shapes and sizes.

Autodesk Inventor software helps Ritter Sport create new designs 30 per cent faster than they could previously to more quickly respond to market trends.

With more than 30 varieties and many different chocolate bar sizes currently available on the market, from the 250g super format to the 8g cube, Ritter Sport has been able to anticipate a wide variety of consumer preferences.

Ritter Sport uses the software’s 3D digital prototyping to achieve realistic 3D visualisation of the chocolate bars and to accelerate revisions during the design process.

Beginning with the shell of the candy bar, designers go straight to Inventor to build 3D digital prototypes.

The radius of the chocolate shells must be small enough to retain the desired shape, yet large enough to prevent air pockets forming in the corners of the mould.

The mould must allow for the bars to be removed easily after they have cooled.

Most Ritter Sport bars have fillings such as nougat, marzipan or nuts inside the chocolate shell and space for these must be included in the digital model.

As a final area of visualisation and simulation, designers must understand how the Ritter Sport logo will scale on each bar when the bar size changes.

Ritter Sport’s utilisation of Autodesk’s Inventor software has earned the chocolatier the title of Autodesk Inventor of the Month for November.

Autodesk products are used by 9 million professionals in 185 countries to save time and money, gain competitive advantage, and change the way ideas are brought to life.

Building Information Modelling

Autodesk building information modelling (BIM) software solutions facilitate a new way of working that involves the creation and use of co-ordinated, consistent information–enabling faster decision-making, better documentation and the ability to predict performance before ground is ever broken.
