Dixons Surgical, a manufacturer of reusable surgical instruments, has invested in Solidworks and SolidCAM, including the Imachining module, to enable it to make more complex orthopaedic instruments, modelled in CAD.

The parametric tools inside Solidworks allows Dixons Surgical to model one part of a range of parts and, with a parametric table, automatically create multiple versions.

SolidCAM is fully integrated inside Solidworks and allows the company to make just one machining program and use the CAD system’s parametric tables to produce the other variants.

The company claims that the system enables it to design and manufacture the jigs and produce the CNC program for each of the three operations required to machine each Fixator from one CAD model and one CAM program.

Key benefits of product application

  • Solved the problems of rigidity and efficient metal removal for milling operations on the machine
  • Cutters last about five times longer than they did previously
  • Imachining enables pockets to be cut in one pass at full depth, starting from a pilot hole, without vibration
  • Quieter milling sound
  • Seamless integration in Solidworks
  • 3D CAD for both new and existing parts
  • Produces smooth and flat finish
  • Greater machining capacity
  • Virtually eliminates programming and setting time

Founded in 1984 by its managing director Dr Emil Somekh, SolidCAM provides manufacturing customers with a full powerful suite of CAM software modules for 2.5D milling, 3D milling, high-speed machining, multi-sided indexial four/five axes milling, simultaneous five axes milling, turning, turn-mill up to seven axes and WireEDM.

SolidCAM is the leader in integrated CAM and provides the highest level of CAD integration, with seamless, single-window integration and full associativity to SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor. The integration ensures the automatic update of tool paths for CAD revisions. SolidCAM powers up the user’s CAD system into the best integrated CAD/CAM solution. SolidCAM has today more than 15,000 seats installed. The company has been on a very rapid growth path since it implemented its CAD integration strategy. SolidCAM is sold by a worldwide reseller network in 50 countries.
