At EMO 2013, SolidCAM will demonstrate SolidCAM 2013 SP2, the latest version of its CAM software. More than 100 enhancements have been made across all of the software’s modules.

These include Imachining 2D and 3D; HSS; High-Speed Roughing (HSR)/High-Speed Machining (HSM); Sim 5x; turning; advanced mill-turn for multi-turret and multi-spindle machines; and the Solid Probe module.

The handling of large models in SolidCAM 2013 has been improved with significant time savings through much faster facet generation. This is said to enable huge reductions in programming time for large CAM parts.

EMO 2013 is due to take place in Hannover on 16–21 September.

Key enhancements

2.5D Milling module

  • Additional toolbox operations have been added
  • Threading and engraving options have been enhanced
  • HSS complementary module for surface machining has been upgraded with extra auto-detection for radial and spiral technologies and lead-in ramping options

3D Milling module

  • This now comprises the HSR and HSM modules
  • Additional strategies and benefits include hybrid machining, faster multi-core calculation and smoother surface finishes

Simultaneous five-axis module

  • Tilting options have been added and improvements made to the Swarf, 5X Drill and Convert HSM to Sim 5x operations
  • Three operations added to the Sim 5x module: multi-blade machining, port machining and contour five-axis machining
  • Multi-blade machining handles impellers and bladed disks with multiple strategies to efficiently rough and finish each part of these complex shapes
  • Port machining is designed for the machining of ports with lollipop milling tools. Four strategies are provided to machine and finish a port: roughing, rest rough, spiral and plunge finishing
  • Contour five-axis machining tilts the tool along a chained 3D profile according to defined tilt lines, making it particularly suitable for deburring and trimming

Advanced Mill-Turn module

  • This handles any type of multi-turret and multi-spindle CNC machine
  • It sets the standard for easy programming for these complicated machines
  • Improvements have been made to the machine control operation, balanced roughing, multi-turret synchronisation and full machine tool simulation

Imachining 2D/3D module

  • This provides users with the fastest cycle times, saving 70 per cent machining time and more
  • It offers good hard material machining, longer tool life and good small tool performance
  • With the Imachining 3D module, users can automatically produce a complete, ready-to-run CNC program with optimal cutting conditions for 3D parts
  • This is achieved by the software’s knowledge-based technology wizard and toolpath roughing and test roughing a complete 3D part, with true scallop on all slopes, in a single operation
  • Imachining 3D, combined with full-depth step-down, intelligent step-up, localised machining and smart positioning, is said to achieve the shortest possible cycle time, with savings of up to 90 per cent
  • Prismatic parts including hundreds of pockets and islands can be milled using Imachining 3D
  • Imachining 3D toolpath is automatically adjusted to avoid collisions between the holder and updated stock at every stage
  • SolidCAM 2013 features an option for step-up rest-rough after each step-down, leaving more room for toolholder avoidance

Solid Probe module

  • This allows users to define the home position and to perform part measurement cycles during machining
  • It is completely integrated with the other SolidCAM operations
  • The module supports tool presetters and tool breakage detection
  • Machining operations and probe operations are intermixed in the CAM manager, using the same geometry
  • Should the solid model change, both the machining and probe operations automatically synchronise to the alteration
