Modular HR2000 spectrometers from Ocean Optics are enabling air-quality monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico as part of Argos Scientific’s portable UV DOAS air monitoring system.

Argos Scientific is working in conjunction with Hillsborough County in Florida to monitor the environmental impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The HR2000 is a small-footprint, high-resolution miniature fibre-optic spectrometer that provides optical resolution to 0.035nm (FWHM).

The modular spectrometer design allows users to select optical bench options such as the detector, grating and entrance aperture (slit).

Argos custom-configured the HR2000 spectrometer used in its portable UV DOAS air monitoring system.

In the Gulf of Mexico, the system has already analysed a number of environmental samples containing a mixture of oil and seawater from the spill area.

Vapour analysed from the samples indicates the presence of two gases with ultraviolet (UV) spectral features being emitted from the samples.

The data from these initial investigations will be used to update the system’s spectral libraries.

A UV DOAS system has been set up in Mississippi for continuous monitoring.

A second Argos system has been sent to North Alabama University, where a calibration and test facility has been established to accommodate future samples associated with the oil and dispersant material collected by community members in the Gulf of Mexico area.

Do you have a great idea for a commercial product that uses optics? Build on our success and bring your unique product to volume markets. Our specialised OEM engineering team will work closely together with your engineering team to ensure the best set-up for your demands.

Our success

Recognized as the inventor of miniature fibre optic spectroscopy, we’ve sold more than 150,000 spectrometers worldwide since 1989. As a result of the dramatic reduction in size and cost, applications once deemed too costly or impractical using conventional spectrometers were not only feasible, but practical. Nowadays our spectrometers can be found anywhere: on treetops in jungles, on oil rigs at sea, on rocket ships in space and even inside the human body.
