Alfa Laval has introduced a standardised spiral heat exchanger designed specifically for use as a vaporiser in a range of process industries.

The all-stainless-steel ALSHE VAP is available on fast delivery times.

Unlike the conventional spiral heat exchanger in which media flow in direct counter-current flow, the ALSHE VAP is configured so that one stream is in spiral flow while the other flows across it, in parallel to its axis.

The spiral flow channel generally accommodates the heating medium while the cross flow channel is dedicated to the fluid to be vaporised or boiled.

This design ensures that the unit can handle high liquid velocities in the closed, spiral channel and, on the boiling side, the large cross flow area with a relatively low physical height makes the unit ideal for operation at low pressure or under vacuum.

Despite a large capacity, the ALSHE VAP is compact in size thanks to its wrapped cylindrical heat transfer surfaces.

The company claims that, consequently, capital and installation costs are lower than for an equivalent shell and tube exchanger and the space required for installation and service is reduced by as much as 80 per cent.

There are currently four models in the ALSHE VAP range providing the ability to handle temperatures up to a maximum of 300C, a minimum temperature of -1,000C and design pressures of up to 8 bar g.

The exchangers complement the established ranges of standard units (for liquid-to-liquid duties and condensing) and Alfa Laval’s custom-designed units for duties involving pressures above 8 bar g or for applications involving aggressive products that demand the use of exotic materials in the construction.

Alfa Laval's operations are based on leading global positions in the three key technologies of heat transfer, separation and fluid handling. Continuous product development is essential to strengthen competitiveness. About 2.7 per cent of total sales are invested annually in research and development, resulting in 25–30 new product launches a year.

Alfa Laval's products are sold in approximately 100 countries, 50 of which have their own sales organisations. The company has 20 large production units (12 in Europe, six in Asia and two in the US) and 70 service centres.

The customer's peace of mind depends on having the right service setup. For Alfa Laval, service is a total concept that covers everything from supplying the smallest spare part to being a lifetime performance partner. Alfa Laval has a global network with more than 200 skilled service specialists, a broad range of competitive service solutions, unique expertise based on more than 120 years in business and service centres in hundreds of locations in more than 50 countries.
