Spirax Sarco has supplied a range of boiler ancillaries and steam plant — including a hotwell, blowdown vessel, controls, valves, and sparging equipment — for a green energy project at Northumbrian Water.

The advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) scheme at the site in Bran Sands, Teesport, converts sewage sludge into energy, and uses thermal hydrolysis — a process that relies on injections of live steam to kill the pathogens in the sludge.

Spirax Sarco also provided on- and off-site training and visits the site regularly as part of a water treatment and chemical dosing contract.

Key benefits of product application

• The green energy project is set to reduce company’s energy bill by 10 per cent

• AAD plant creates enough power to make the sludge treatment process self-sufficient

• Additional power provides electricity to meet half of the Bran Sands site’s entire energy requirements

• User valued reputation and reliability of Spirax Sarco engineers
