Hepcomotion has introduced ring system actuators onto which solar panels or mirrors are mounted to follow the sun, enabling more efficient generation of renewable energy, even in hostile environments.

With an ability to withstand high temperature, dust ingress and zero lubrication, Hepcomotion’s motion systems are particularly suitable for this purpose.

Many solar-cell installations use fixed cells, where the cells are permanently orientated towards the point at which the sun is at its highest position in the sky, providing the greatest concentration of energy.

The downside is that these systems are less efficient at capturing energy during other times of the day.

Suntracking is a method that enhances the efficiency of the solar cell by continuously optimising its position in relation to the sun.

The Hepcomotion ring is used to achieve a pan and tilt arrangement to keep the cell orientated to the sun as it tracks the sky.

The resultant energy is then turned directly into electricity in the cell or used to turn water into steam that powers turbines for electricity generation.

Another variation on the same theme is the use of mirrors that direct the solar energy onto a central photovoltaic cell.

The Hepcomotion ring has the strength to hold these mirrors, which are often very heavy.

It is also suitable for operation in temperature extremes and hostile environments.

The vee profile of the ring tracks provides a self-cleaning action that eliminates contaminants, such as dust, from the slideway.

The inherently low friction of the design means that, in most cases, dry running is perfectly possible, with no lubrication needed between slide and wheel.

All these features are advantageous for suntracking applications as these systems are typically installed in hot, arid and often dusty atmospheres and also in locations where minimal maintenance is a pre-requisite.

Designing a unique engineering principle and making it a commercial success is quite an accomplishment.  Developing that concept and embracing complementary technologies to the point where the business becomes a world leader in its field takes that achievement into a different league.  HepcoMotion has achieved both and in 2009 celebrates 40th year of trading.

Today HepcoMotion is one of the world’s foremost innovators and manufacturers of linear motion technology.  And this can be attributed to the important tenet – continued investment in its people processes and products.  This has allowed the company to grow even at times of economical difficulty.

Although its range of individual, linear motion products remains an important part of its business the growth area for HepcoMotion in recent years is in specials and assemblies.  Almost one fifth of its shop floor space is devoted to assembly and the company has invested heavily in flexible manufacturing to ensure that even last minute changes can be accommodated to customer specification.

Constantly re-assessing its strengths against changing market demands continues to provide HepcoMotion with the momentum for business growth.  The culture of ongoing investment has certainly worked well throughout its first 40 years and will continue to underpin its business in the decades to come.
