The Liquidew IS moisture-in-liquids analyser from Michell Instruments has been selected by a major producer of synthetic rubber to monitor critical processes at its plant in Asia.

The plant produces polybutadiene, generated from a feedstock of the gas 1,3 butadiene. The gas is pressurised to form a liquid phase and is then dissolved in hexane.

The reaction to form the polybutadiene requires a catalyst — in this case an alkyl-lithium compound that is only effective in near-anhydrous conditions where there is no more than 1ppmW of moisture present.

Six Liquidew IS analysers are installed at key points in the process to monitor moisture levels in the feedstock and the solvent, as well as in the drying process used to regenerate the solvent.
