Fronius has launched a tandem welding process called CMT Twin that allows users to apply two cold-metal transfer (CMT) processes or to combine a CMT process with a GMA pulsed arc welding process within one system. CMT Twin is suitable for use in the automotive and supplier industries, in shipbuilding and mechanical engineering and in the power generation field.

CMT Twin comes with two digital power sources that work completely separately from one another. This allows the weld processes to be individually adjusted to different applicational requirements and also means that — within the given physical limitations — any wirefeeder can be chosen.

Because this makes it possible to set widely diverging wirefeed speeds, as well as allowing flexibility in terms of which weld processes are used, users can control the thermal input and deposition rate very precisely. According to the company, this lets them achieve the optimum welding speed and seam quality with almost any welding position and combination of materials.

CMT Twin is particularly well suited to welding light-gauge sheets at high speed and for positional welding with high deposition rates without exceeding the optimum thermal input.

Key features and benefits

  • High process reliability is ensured
  • CMT Twin ensures good seam quality, gap-bridging ability and speed
  • Only minimal postweld machining is ever needed
  • Process is suitable for welding light-gauge sheets at high speeds
  • Thermal input and deposition rate are controllable
  • It is possible to achieve high welding speeds
  • Arc length is unaffected by the surface of the workpiece or the welding speed

Its new state-of-the-art facility in Milton Keynes extends over 3,800m2 and houses the Tech Support team, the Repair Center, a warehouse and a training area and epitomises the importance of being able to deliver a first-class service to customers.

Sales and service teams, both at head office and regionally, ensure that customers are supported as quickly as possible on their own premises. In addition, customers benefit from services such as calibration, a warranty extension and a maintenance contract.

For decades, Fronius has made significant contributions to advances in welding technology. The company is still in family ownership and its welding technology division is now one of the world’s technology leaders in the arc welding market segment. It is also the market leader in Europe.

Welding Technology is one of three Fronius divisions. Since the 1940s, Fronius has been creating technologies and solutions for monitoring and controlling energy in battery-charging systems, and since 1992 the same in solar electronics. The mains-connected inverter, the unique Fronius Service Partner programme and products for monitoring photovoltaic systems make Fronius one of the leading suppliers in the field of solar electronics.
